Rhode Island Striped Bass(Stripers) & Bluefish Charters

Maverick Charters is your destination for a great Rhode Island striper charter.

Our trips have produced angler limits on most charters. On each trip you can catch your share of bluefish if desired. They are delicious when smoked.

From spring through fall, stripers, bluefish and bonito invade the cool waters of Block Island, RI resulting in some of the best and most consistent fishing on the East Coast. Giant schools of blitzing stripers and blues with screaming birds are the norm, and fast action on light tackle makes a trip on our charter boats unforgettable.

Maverick offers trips leaving from Snug Harbor Marina and Jim's Dock respectively. Because of Snug Harbor's location, you will be fishing the prime waters of Block Island, RI within minutes. By State law we have a 2 fish, 28" minimum, limit per angler for striped bass. If you would like to keep your fish our crews will clean and ice your catch before you leave the boat. Tackle, bait, and bottled water are supplied. No license is required.

Tuna Fishing with Capt. Jack

From early summer through fall, these school and giant bluefin tuna can be found in waters well within 60 miles of Rhode Island. In the early part of the season you will troll our custom Maverick Tackle squid bars and Tuna Trains amongst the feeding whales and porpoise south of Block Island. After the tuna settle in the Fall we drift and chum with a variety of baits. The Maverick will also be offering vertical jigging for school tuna on the days when they are down and won't come up for a trolled rig.

Enjoy the benefits of our extensive experience and knowledge pursuing this elusive and hard-fighting game fish. The school bluefin tuna run from 30# to 150# with the norm around 60 to 90#. Giant bluefin can run in excess of 1000 pounds and are some of the hardest fighting fish in the world.

Depending on conditions, we will be trolling our custom squid rigs, spreader bars, live-lining bluefish, or drifting with chunk baits. Once you are hooked up, you will go one-on-one with the fish of a lifetime. We are equipped with Penn 80 and 130 one- and two-speed reels with custom Offshore Pursuits tuna rods.

Rhode Island Fishing Tips & Techniques

Medium Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna
Standup, Conventional and Spin tuna tackle.

We will step offshore a few miles to get away from the bluefish and into deeper water. All the while we look for birds working on schools of bait that have been pushed to the surface by feeding Tuna. Trolling our custom Maverick squid bars, rigged ballyhoo, and custom lures on standup rods provides one of fishing’s greatest thrills and challenges.

Giant Bluefin Tuna and Shark

Fighting Chair, Standup or Fixed Rod Holder available based on the angler's experience..

The Maverick has been very successful during June, July, and August trolling custom squid rigs, brined mackerel bars, and rigged ballyhoo. As new fall fish migrate in from offshore we will drift, chum and place sewn or live baits at different depths in the water column. During certain conditions we will drift with live lined bluefish for bait.

Both of the above techniques are used for Shark fishing. When anglers hook up they can fight the fish from a fixed transom rod holder or a custom fighting chair.

About Captain Jack

JoAnn and I have returned to Snug Harbor, RI to fish the same waters we enjoyed twenty five years ago. We love the Cape but the two hour drive door to door on good traffic days has taken the bloom off the rose.

For the past 20 summers JoAnn and I have commercial, sport, and charter fished the East Cape and Islands out of Harwich Port, Ma. Prior to that we fished the offshore waters south of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, and Montauk out of Pt. Judith, R.I. Jack has been a lifelong resident of Rhode Island leaving only for a tour of duty as a U.S. Army officer during the Vietnam period after graduation from the University of Rhode Island. He is a certified U.S. Coast Guard Captain, a member of the National Association Of Charterboat Operators, and the IGFA. As both mate and angler, Jack has won and placed in the Block Island Billfish, Rhode Island Tuna, and Point Judith Masters Invitational Tuna tournaments.

JoAnn earned a B.A. degree from Wheaton College, MA and an MBA from the University of R.I. JoAnn has won the Allen Harbor "Shoot Out" Fourth of July tournament every year she has participated on the Maverick.

JoAnn and I have enjoyed fishing the offshore waters of Rhode Island and Cape Cod, Massachusetts for striped bass, bluefish, sharks, marlin, yellowfin and bluefin tuna for over 35 years.

We are both easy-going and very flexible when it comes to your sport fishing adventures on the "Maverick". Please let us know if you have any special requests to make your trip more enjoyable. Our team of professionals Capt. Jack and JoAnn look forward to meeting you.

Tightlines,
JoAnn and Captain Jack Riley
